The Cure Underneath the Ocean

Using marine animals' defenses against disease to cure human illnesses

Panama City Beach, Florida - "Marine animals have been on earth hundreds of millions of years longer than humans. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that a number of these animals have perfected mechanisms to cure or prevent disease. Conceivably, 'new' cures and preventives currently being sought for a number of human diseases may already exist in marine animals." This astounding revelation and more are found in Dr. Albert C. Smith's ground-breaking book The Aquatic Roots of Human Pathology (now available through 1st Books Library). A noted pathologist and marine biologist, Dr. Smith has been recognized by prestigious organizations such as the American Foundation for Oceanography, the International Society for Aquatic Medicine, and was included in Who's Who in the World, 2002.

Comprehensive and well-documented, The Aquatic Roots of Human Pathology covers breakthrough research in the fields of Human Medicine, more particularly, it dissects the following:

  • Immunology - Allowing Xenotransplantation - the idea of transplanting marine or invertebrate tissues into humans.
  • Ophthalmology - Preventing Cataracts - what factors in the shark lens allow it to retain transparency in the presence of high concentrations of insoluble protein (about 50% compared to 40% for humans), and can this information be applied to human cataract treatments?
  • Cardiology - Reversing Coronary Artery Disease - study shows that a species of fish called the Pacific steelhead trout can unlock the mystery behind coronary artery disease.
  • Cardiology - Self-Resuscitation - study shows that the tunicate has a double heart system with a pacemaker at each end that allows the heart compartments to alternate in pumping blood. The stopped heart compartment eventually resuscitates and begins beating again, while the other rests. Study of this mechanism could advance our knowledge of heart resuscitation techniques for humans.

Apart from explaining the results of experiments, Dr. Smith divulges intriguing information about human diseases experienced by marine animals. Surprisingly, Dr Smith says, animals have their own way of curing themselves and even preventing those diseases, and if scientists discover how the animals do that and how to apply the methods to humans, then humans will have more reason to enjoy longer lives.

Dr. Albert C. Smith is also a respected scientist in the field of Marine Science. He has already received numerous awards for his contributions in this field of research. Currently, he holds academic appointments in Departments of Oceanography and Marine Science in Florida universities. He earned his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine, and completed his medical degree from the University of Hawaii.
